And You're On In...5...4...3...2...1...

Moving cross country may be a difficult undertaking, but it doesn't have to be hard to continue communication.

While talking to my parents, my dad felt it necessary to Jaws the camera some more.  How do you not love this man?

Smile.  You're on candid...webcam.  You can tell my mom's thrilled about having her picture taken.  While wearing white.  And by a Skype-r 3,000 miles away.  While my dad's ready for the first day of school.

Next up.  The parents getting a new webcam.  Then Trac getting a new one too.  And then...no 'and then'...but seriously, then we'll figure out how to webcam via a Brady Bunch-type screen.  Right now, all I can figure out is conference calling without video.  That's not good enough.  I need shots of everyone's head.  I'll even put a picture of Alice in the middle.

Town Point Wine Festival

Downtown Wine Festival.  $25/entry.  11am - 6pm.  Oh goodness.

What was supposed to be an all-day thing for me, thankfully only ended up being 5 hours or so.  Anymore, and I think one of us wouldn't have made it.  (Not wook & I.  One of wook's classmates.)

The VA wines we tasted were okay.  I'm still partial to Cali and So. Oregon varieties.  There was one that knocked our socks off.  It was a merlot that was put in old whiskey barrels.  How cool is that?  The hint of whiskey is awesome.  Taste of the day.  Purchase.

White Fences Vineyard's Meteor Bright White for anyone who cares.

The thing seemed to be to taste until you find one you like.  Or are too impatient to get a buzz while tasting.  Then you purchase a bottle, sit out on the pier, and drink.  There were more than just a couple glasses broken yesterday.  If you so desire or need, lather, rinse, and repeat.

I didn't even think about the weather before we left.  I did get a little pink on one arm.  If I were with it yesterday, I would have popped open my umbrella that I always have in my purse.  But I didn't.  The weather wasn't my first priority yesterday.  So now one of my arms is slightly pink.  I'm bummed.  I take pride in my paleness.  It takes skill being too lazy to get even a slight abalone complexion.

And just for fun.  I stalked a wedding party taking pictures in an alley.  Weird.

Happy Mother's Day!

While Hallmark does make a mean deal on all these holidays, it doesn't go without a shout-out to my mom on her day.

Thanks for the 6 hours of labor.  The redhead genes.  The freckles.  The inability to tan.  And the thought that I'd never amount to anything graceful thus your putting me in ballet classes at 3.

I love you, mom.

Love,

The other-awesome-redhead-in-the-family-slash-eldest-daughter.

Ashley, Food Critic

Bloods vs. Crypts.  East vs. West.  In-N-Out vs. 5 Guys.  The battle is on.

With my palate fresh off a run to Redding for some de-li-cious In-N-Out, I thought it only appropriate to utilize this recent memory and try out the East Coast's version of 5 Guys.  I heard, "It's better than In-N-Out."  And I've heard, "It's not as good as In-N-Out, but it's the best burger you'll find out here."

Tastebuds, are you ready?

I order a "little bacon cheeseburger" with mushrooms and lettuce.  Wook got a "double cheeseburger" with all the fixings.  And we split a small fry.  And then sat and waited for our number to be called.  Drumroll, please.

Our food has arrived.  And wook completed the meal with a little ketchup cup.  And that bag is full of fries.  Good golly.

Survey says?

Presentation clearly goes to In-N-Out.  Cheese paper.  Exposed awesomeness.  2 points.

Fries are a different story though.  While I eat the In-N-Out fries, they aren't constructed in my ideal manner.  I prefer thicker, beefier cuts.  With this said, the 5 Guys fries were pretty good.  I preferred them.  I'd give 2 points.

How you doing, wook?  Enjoying it?

An eaten splice of my burger.  The bacon was delicious, although it was probably cooked in a microwave.  I liked the smaller patty size just because I can't handle the bigger burgers (thus my ordering a petite Bonsai, no tomato, at Red Robin).  And no cheese foil.  At least this round.

The wookie enjoying his meal.

And there's no real way to categorize the rest of the debate between In-N-Out vs. 5 Guys.  It's up to the burger.  5 Guys was a good burger.  It hit the spot.  It has hippie standards about never freezing their beef and cooking their fries in a certain kind of oil.  I would certainly eat there again.

But with that said, comes the description of In-N-Out.  There's nothing like an In-N-Out burger.  If I were to bite into a 5 Guys burger, I wouldn't have a clear distinction about its origin.  But In-N-Out's a different story.  There's a taste about it.  You know that's a #2, plain, with lettuce.  Or a #1, animalized, if that's your style.  You just know it.

So while I could pick a winner according to my lame point system, I'll leave it as it is.  I'm on the East Coast now, and I'll certainly enjoy 5 Guys when frequented.  But there'll always be a place in my heart and a portion of my gas tank for a trek to In-N-Out.  Always.

An Oregonian Classic

Where does someone go to dinner when they're staying at the Chateau de Tracy?

He's a Rubberhead Rub-er In-ner.  It's okay, I gave him permission.  Hello, McMenamin's.  I've missed you.  Dad and Trac too.

New Arrival!

What should appear in wook's (and I's) mailbox?

I'm looking at upping my cooking skills.  This is my magazine of choice.

Can't wait!

Annoyed.

How hard is it to find hangers without the little trench that holds straps?

Not at Walmart.  Not at Target.  KMart maybe?  We'll see there tomorrow.

It's not like I'm asking for the world.  Just some hangers.

Comforts From Home

But first off, a shot of my luggage.  Some may call it an explosion.

I need a dresser.  We're working on that.  Garage sales and Craigslist, here we come.  Or if you know of someone in the area (dad, auction?) with excessive furniture, let me know.  Esthetics isn't an issue.  Thus God made sand paper, paint, and Lowe's for new knobs.

An easy chair requires a blanket for lounging.  Thus this purple fleece received (I believe) for Christmas from a certain Santo Kerbina many moons ago.

Wook only has 2.5 kitchen towels.  So I decided to add the one I got for St. Patty's day to the mix.  Let's hope this one isn't used to clean up grease.

"Just so you know I brought over trivets."  "What are trivets?"  Haha.  I scored these at Ross like Jr. year in college for $2/pop.  Awe-to-the-some.

I love my cutting board.  So much I stashed in the bottom of the duffel bag, adding an extra 10 lbs to the mix.  Wook's are all man-handled.  Mine's still very pretty.  I'm judgmental with cutting boards.  Sue me.

You never know when you'll need to transport coffee, tea...hot-buttered rum.

Do these need an explanation?  Okay, apparently it does.  Wook can cook.  I can follow recipes.  No recipes = only eating the small assortment of meals in my head that I can cook without instructions.

Like any female or gay man, I like to bake.  Wook doesn't have any sheets, so I brought over my industrial ones.  Scones, anyone?

Destination: That Other Coast

The morning was a rough one.  Let's just say a snotty-nosed Ashley went through security and was asked, "So how are you this morning?"  Look at me man.  It looks like my cat died.  I'm still blotchy.  I have snot coming out of my nose.  I can't see through my watery eyes.  Oh, I'm peachy.

My obvious response, "I've been better."  Derr...

So after the hour-long wait at my gate in Medford, we boarded the plane.  Thank goodness my seatmate looked like a recluse grandma.  I could really use a nap.  After an hour of sleep the night before, I curled into my pretzelly self and slept through most of the flight.  That's after my devout Catholic routine every flight of praying for myself, the pilots, the skies, the air-traffic controllers, Santa, the Tooth Fairy, my stomach, my luggage, and timely connections.

I somehow remember a delay outta Medford, but I'll be honest...my "Rabbi beard" is incredibly comfy so I usually knock right out.  What's a Rabbi beard?  My travel pillow.  It's U-shaped, and can also double as a Rabbi beard if I ever need to perform a circumcision or a funeral.

Anyways, so touchdown San Fran.  The flight attendant knows there a tight connection to Philly (now after the delay) after Grandma and Grampa Old-As-Crap-And-Don't-Understand-Air-Travel complain about needing to hurry up and thinking they can push through the middle aisle upon landing.  Good luck.  So us Philly folks (a half dozen or so, which on a Medford flight is like a third of the plane) are allowed to get off quickly before everyone else (kinda awesome).

But this isn't before a slight glitch in the system.

"We're sorry for the delay folks.  We're having difficulty opening the hatch.  There shouldn't be more than a 20-minute delay."

INSTA-GROAN!  Omg, I've never heard it before.  It was like a pack of zombies were there.

Then someone next to me said she didn't hear the announcement.

"She said that there's a problem opening the door, so there might be a 20-minute delay.  But honestly, if I can get a couple alcoholic drinks comp'd, I'd be okay with it."  *Cue the chucklin' crowd.*

Thank goodness 1.5 minutes later that door was open, and we were off.

So I make it through SFO, through security, yacking at my dad telling him I had made it there, found my gate and heard, "Now boarding all rows flight ### to Philadelphia."

Well that's quick.  No time to tinkle.  No time for food.  No time for sanity.  I wonder if those f.o.p.'s made it.  Not like it's my problem.  Old people and traveling are not my combination.  But let's not start another post now.  Focus, people.

So we're on the plane.  "Good morning, looks like we're having a full flight so if you could just stay seated we'll be moving shortly."  Okay, no worries.

Turns out, the flight was only 70% full and they didn't want people moving around so the plane balance was off.  Makes sense to me.  Then this woman keeps bitchin' about how she wants to sit someone place upfront.  Obviously this woman wasn't a Rhode Scholar and doesn't understand the need for balance in a safe flight.  Hopefully she hasn't reproduced with those genes.  Okay, off subject again.  Returning.

But by this time the flight attendants were right by my row, so I ask, "So does this mean I get the whole row to myself?  Like I can stretch out?"

"My goodness, you can do whatever you want after we get into the air."

NO WAY.  DUDE.  SERIOUSLY.  SCORE.  BACK OFF.  THIS IS MY ROW!

So here my legs are, stretched out, enjoying this 4.5 hour flight to Philly.  And it wasn't 4.5 for me.  It was 1.5.  See, when you don't sleep the night before, you're really tired.  Really tired.  So after we were up, I buckled myself in the middle seat loosely and laid the heck down.  I slept for 3 hours.  It was amazing.  I stirred every now and then.  But you won't believe how comfortable it is until you experience it yourself.  Absolutely spoiled.

Now what was supposed to be a quick connection in Philly turned into Denver-Christmas 2.0.  As soon as I leave Sarah a message about being in VA around 7:45pm, I hear an announcement.

"Blah, blah, blah...delayed incoming aircraft...blah blah...departure time of 7:40pm."

You know what, we're cool.  I passed a bar on the way in.  So I let the troops know of the news, walked back to the bar, plopped my butt down, ordered a Guinness and some chicken fingers, and chatted up a stranger from mid-state New York.  Delay, shmelay.  Nothing new to me.  But this time I get to entertain my liver and stomach.  If I hadn't gotten that severe nap, I probably would have been a Crabby Ashley.  But this time.  We're good, we're good.

So we finally boarded at 8:10pm, and my dad said we got off the ground at 8:50pm (he stalks all my flights just so he knows where I'm at).  I say this because I don't remember taking off.  I had fallen asleep.  Mind you, I had been traveling 12 hours.  I'm allowed.  I woke up mid-flight to some narly turbulence.  Like Space Mountain turbulence.  It was kinda fun.

Got into Norfolk.  Dog tired.  Wook thankfully met me at Baggage because I needed help with my 2nd checked bag of 54.5 lbs.  (And they didn't dock me for it, shwing!)  We got home.  Said hi to the turtles.  Dragged my fleece pajama pants outta the duffel.  And crawled into bed.  We didn't even hit up Taco Bell which my dad had joked about earlier in the day.  I scrounged down a half bowl of Cheerios.  That's it.  Sad.  I know.  But at least wook had gone out and made the big purchase.  20 points.

Arrival

I just wanted to put a post out to the world that says, "I've made it."

There's much awesomeness and much "Are you serious?"-ness to entertain everyone.

But I need to get over the time shift first. I just woke up. At 7:30am my time (10:30 here). Gimme some time to change, jeez. My toast just popped up, so I'll be feeling better once my tummer is full.

All I can say is stay tuned. :)

My Tentative Itinerary

In case people were interested/concerned/cared, I'll highlight my itinerary so you know when I'm back on the ground or when I'm pretzeled in my window seat sleeping with my travel pillow.

Medford to San Fran
Departs 6:00am (PST)
Arrives 7:17am (PST)

San Fran to Philly
Departs 8:30am (PST)
Arrives 4:41pm (EST)/1:41pm (PST)

Philly to Norfolk
Departs 6:10am (EST)/3:10pm (PST)
Arrives 7:21am (EST)/4:21pm (PST)

I wanted to avoid Chicago since they have a high case of connection eff-up-itis.  And Charlotte wasn't available.  Denver cost $50 more, and required a 3+ hour layover.  I didn't feel like flying into La Guardia just to connect (so close to the Big Apple, but so far away).

So this is what was available.  Let's hope my plan of staying up really late will cause me to sleep away the awful leg from Frisco to Philly.  Anything more than 2 hours without a break for a beer doesn't spring for a happy Ashley.  Maybe I'll indulge in an alcoholic beverage on the puddle-jumper flight from Philly to Norfolk.

Bubby's apartment complex is experiencing some slight soggifying.

Skype, Up and Running

Got my old webcam working for my dad so we can chat via video.

My dad in World Headquarters imitating Shark Week on Discovery.

All In A Day's Work

How about strapping on a shoelace to tether around a tree while you perform an aerial ballet with a chainsaw?  Ya, me neither.

I couldn't believe this.  In the weather we had today.  That biblical storm made its way north.  Medford was taking rain like the Northwestern.  I think I would have called in sick today.

It's flippin' high.  That house with the basketball hoop is a two-story house (and for those who know, it's Jon Ashbaugh's old house).  Dayum.

Way to take your top off.  *wink*

Me: "I caught a chunk falling!"
Dad: "You must be so proud."

It took forever to get this far, tossing down 1-ft. chunks at a time.

All gone.  But the rain and wind remained.  I wonder if they got hazard pay.

Come Home Already

I'm having withdrawals with one less blog to stalk.  Come home soon, please.  I miss you.  And your blog.  Plus, I'm dying to see photographic proof.  Flap your wings.  It'll make your flight go faster.

How do you not love this kid?  I know, I know, I'm partial.

Two words: Bad Ass.  Or "Mohawk Madness."  Or "Jabba the Baby."  Okay, that was 3 words.

Digestive Delight

I leave in less than 48 hours.  My stomach was a little empty from not exactly being in the mood for food after the Fight Night hosted by "Count Drunkula."  I was wanting something familiar.  Something of substance.  Something to bank in the memory pile.  Something of the Gods.

One state border down.  Can you guess where we're headed?

But first a funny license plate.  You know where I'm going to be buying my next stash.  Dimebag, please.

The crazy dragon that's right off the road.  Literally.  He's so close you could feed him fake food.  Oh, the weird things you'll see on roadtrips.

As soon as we hit town, it started pouring.  Like in Biblical proportions.  Where's the Ark?

He's like an Archangel.  The bearer of deliciousness.  Even though the clouds were thick outside, there was a parting of the storm within the building.

Two #2's, animalized, with everything.  One #2, plain, with lettuce.

I can still taste it.  Oh...so...good.  I even thought about buying one for the road and eating it after the first food baby was digested.

It had been over 3 years since her tastebuds could dance to this tune.  Wow.  That's far too long.

My dad wanted to make sure and rub the label in.

AFTER.  Oh.So.Legen...dary.

One documented case of a food baby.  (And she wanted clarification that she was, in fact, pushing out.  There, Stac, clarification.)

Let's just say the torrential downpour in the valleys results in snow in the mountains.

Stacey was emo-shooting herself.  I invaded the picture.  My dad's being the perfect "Wilson."  Hysterical.  Best shot of the day.

And lastly, the metal cow that's on the side of I-5 in the wonderful State of Jefferson.  Oh, that psuedo-51st state.

The Final Countdown

Where did these 2 months go?  It was just yesterday that I came back from Norfolk, absolutely loving it, on the brink of another great family vacation, and had all the time in the world to prepare for this transition.  Crap.  I fly out Tuesday.  And you know I'll be staying up late packing the night before.  It just wouldn't be me if I didn't.  Besides, that's my secret for jumping time zones and avoiding jet lag.  Good ol' fashioned extreme exhaustion.

I {Heart} Capt. John

It seems that America joins me in my love of a certain Deadliest Catch Captain.  While I love many of the boys, Capt John takes the cake.  My cake.

Not that I would actually purchase this item.  But just the thought that it's on CafePress.com kills me.  Who's decision was it to go there?  A t-shirt is one thing, butt floss...a totally separate thing.

Product Review: Safeway Sleeping Aid pills

So I've been on this downward spiral of a sleeping habit.  I get tired at midnight, wake up at 9, then that night I get tired at 1am,  and then wake up at 10am...blah blah blah.  Well, I don't really want to be pulling all-nighters in the next 4 days, so I decided to do something about it.

For less than $5, I got 32 pills last night with 50% more the sleepiness than Advil PM.  Go big or go home, right?  Good lord.  I think I got 10 hours of sleep last night, not counting the 2 hours this morning where I've still been groggy.  And that was only with 1 pill.  I don't think I thought out this plan fully.

I'm attempting to wake up with a hefty cup of tea.  Maybe another bowl of Cheerios will get me moving.

Just hope I don't fall victim to a nap.  Although that does sound nice.
